HOW MUCH INSURANCE IS ENOUGH
TO COVER MY “STUFF”?
Determining the right insurance amount to cover all your personal property, or “stuff” can be a daunting task. But, we have a couple of tools that will make it somewhat easier for you.
First, is a handy “PERSONAL INVENTORY’ brochure that will help you list all your belongings and estimate their current value. Simply call or stop by the office. We’ll be happy to provide you with one of the brochures to get you started.
Second, there is an online tool found at knowyourstuff.org This is a free software tool that enables you to create an inventory of your household goods. They do offer you the option of storing your inventory online for a nominal fee, but if you choose to keep your records on disk, CD or other computer storage device, there is no charge for using the software.
Knowing what you have not only helps you to determine if you’ve got the right insurance value, but it will also help you at the time of claim to prove what you had. Remember: the burden of proof for a personal property claim is on you, the insured. The more documentation you have (photos, video, receipts) the better off you will be. In addition, remember to keep your records off-site.
